Sermon Catchup

I just realised I’ve not posted any sermon uploads here since October – time for an Epic Catchup! 4 December 2011, 9.15 only: On Trial! 11 December 2011, 9.15 only: The Nativity. 18 December 2011: Salvation has been sent (9.15); Salvation has been sent (11.00). 8 January 2012, 9.15 only: Deborah. 15 January 2012, 10.30 …

Make your church website suck less

Earlier today, I commented on Twitter that a lot of church websites “make me want to cry“.  This spawned a number of suggestions as to why it might be.  The simple answer of course is that it’s because so many church websites are just very bad indeed. Now, I’m not a definitive expert on how …

Sorry Facebook, you crossed the line

Facebook

I posted a photo on Facebook today that was only visible to a selected group of friends. When one of those friends commented, a friend of theirs with whom I am not “friends” commented, that friend (and presumably all of said person’s friends) was able to see the photo. Sorry, Facebook. Line crossed. If you …

Steve Jobs: A non-fanboy writes

Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple has died at the age of 56 after a battle against cancer.  This is a tragedy for his family and friends – I know from my own life (my father died of cancer in his 40s) that cancer is an evil corruption of life and while its ultimate defeat comes …

Cocked, barrel to head, pulling trigger

This morning, Nokia announced their “Strategy for 2011“.  This strategy is based around dropping Symbian (and essentially sidelining MeeGo) in favour of Windows Phone 7. As I said on Twitter this morning (and thanks to those who retweeted it), This morning’s Nokia news is like a man calling a press conference to shoot himself in …

What is a person worth?

Facebook is apparently “worth” $50bn, based on an investment from Goldman Sachs.  Facebook doesn’t do anything, doesn’t produce anything, doesn’t make anything.  It is the archetypal dotCom business (and you thought that bubble burst a decade or so ago) in many respects. So, where does its value lie? Facebook’s value is in you, if you …

Another decade over, a new one just begun

So, having reflected a couple of days ago on my resolutions for 2011, I’m going to look back over the last 10 years, the decade often known as the “naughties”. Year-by-year, what happened in Ogleyland?

New server, new theme

Within the last 24 hours, my hosting company, BigWetFish have migrated my site onto a new, high specified, UK-based, server. This should improve the performance of the site for all users – and especially the majority who are UK-based themselves. In addition, anyone accessing the site from mobile devices (roughly 20% of users) will now …

O, won’t you please authenticate me

Yesterday, Twitter disabled the basic username/password authentication for client applications. This is a move toward greater security but it did mean that anyone using Gwibber will suddenly have found that their Twitter stream stopped updating. A mere matter of hours later and an updated version of Gwibber has been pushed out that supports the new …

The Seven Link Challenge

Various people I follow on Twitter (RevdLesley, TheChurchMouse) have responded to the Seven Link Challenge – which is supposed to improve one’s blogging. There are seven categories of posts and you have to name one for each. I’ve been blogging for a long time (getting on towards ten years now, started on Advogato in 2001) …
